India aims to produce 300 million tonnes of crude steel by 2030, the Steel Ministry said, citing strong domestic demand growth from infrastructure, housing, automotive and renewables. The goal builds on recent capacity additions and seeks to position India as a reliable supplier for both domestic and export markets.
Officials outlined a multi-pronged plan: accelerating brownfield and greenfield expansions across BF-BOF and EAF/IF routes, easing logistics and mining bottlenecks, deepening scrap recycling, and improving coking coal security. Policy support including specialty steel manufacturing and faster clearances will be aligned to ensure timely commissioning of new units.
Decarbonisation remains a parallel priority. The ministry said India will advance green steel pathways through efficiency upgrades, higher scrap use, and R&D collaborations on hydrogen-ready DRI and low-carbon technologies. Stakeholder consultations with steelmakers, state governments and technology partners will firm up project timelines and investment requirements in the coming months.
