India has set an ambitious target to boost its annual steel production capacity to 500 million tonnes by 2047, aligning with the country’s 100th year of independence. The announcement was made by Steel Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy at a recent industry workshop.
The move aims to support long-term economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development. It also reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global hub for green steel, with a strong focus on low-carbon production methods.
To drive this transformation, the government is introducing new initiatives such as the Steel Collaboration Portal under the Steel Research and Technology Mission of India (SRTMI). A Green Steel Taxonomy is also being developed to guide sustainable practices across the sector.
Currently, India produces around 140 million tonnes of finished steel, highlighting the scale of growth required to meet the 2047 goal. Achieving this target will involve significant investment in capacity expansion, technology, and clean energy integration.
The 500 MT vision positions India to lead the global steel industry with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
