India Regains Net Steel Exporter Status as Imports Drop 40%

India has regained its status as a net steel exporter after two years, supported by a sharp decline in imports and steady overseas demand.

According to official data, finished steel imports fell by around 40% in April–July 2025 compared to the same period last year. Shipments from major suppliers such as China and Japan recorded steep drops, while domestic steelmakers increased output to meet both local and export demand.

At the same time, exports held steady, driven by orders from markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The decline in imports was aided by government measures, including higher duties on select steel products and initiatives to boost domestic manufacturing capacity.

Industry analysts say this shift strengthens India’s trade balance in steel and reduces dependence on foreign supplies, aligning with the government’s push for self-reliance in key industrial sectors.
