✅ India challenges EU’s steel safeguards at WTO over export concerns.
✅ Measures could restrict Indian steel exports and affect competitiveness.
✅ Government aims to protect market access through legal and diplomatic steps.
The Indian government has formally challenged the European Union’s (EU) new steel safeguard measures at the World Trade Organization (WTO). India fears that the revised safeguards could significantly impact its steel exports to the EU, which is a key market for Indian manufacturers.
The EU recently tightened its steel import quotas and imposed stricter tariffs to protect domestic producers from a surge in global steel supplies. Indian officials argue that these measures are restrictive and unfairly target Indian steel exports. India’s complaint to the WTO seeks to challenge the legal basis of these safeguards, claiming they violate global trade norms and could lead to a sharp decline in export volumes.
Indian steelmakers have expressed concern that the EU's new measures could hurt competitiveness and lead to lower margins. Major players such as Tata Steel and JSW Steel are closely monitoring the situation. The government is expected to engage in diplomatic negotiations while pursuing the case at the WTO to secure favorable terms for Indian exporters.
