Hyundai Steel will unveil a detailed model of its planned low-carbon electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill in Louisiana, USA, at the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The model will be displayed at the Hyundai Motor Group booth during the event, which runs from December 4 to 7.
The Louisiana mill is Hyundai Steel’s first steelmaking facility in North America and forms part of Hyundai Motor Group’s wider investment programme in the United States. Designed as an ultra-low-carbon plant, it will use direct reduced iron (DRI) and EAF technology, initially based on natural gas with carbon capture, before progressively transitioning to blue and then green hydrogen as supply and costs allow. Commercial operations are targeted around the end of the decade, with an expected annual capacity of about 2.7 million tonnes.
At the expo, visitors will be able to see a bird’s-eye-view layout of the mill, including the DRI unit, EAF, hot- and cold-rolling lines and supporting infrastructure, along with video content explaining Hyundai Steel’s phased roadmap toward hydrogen-based, near-net-zero steel production. The company aims to position the project as a cornerstone of both Hyundai Motor Group’s decarbonised automotive supply chain and Louisiana’s emerging hydrogen economy.
