GPIL Secures Environmental Clearance for Major Steel Mill Expansion

Godavari Power and Ispat Limited (GPIL) has received environmental clearance from India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for its ambitious greenfield steel mill project in Chhattisgarh.

About the project:

The integrated steel mill will be constructed in Saroda, Chhattisgarh, with a total capacity of 2 million metric tons per year. The project will be implemented in two phases of 1 million MT capacity each, representing a strategic expansion for the company.

GPIL currently operates multiple facilities including a direct reduction iron (DRI) facility of 0.60 million MT per year, billet production capacity of 0.525 million MT, iron ore mining operations of 3.05 million MT, and a pellet plant producing 2.70 million MT annually.

This environmental clearance marks a crucial regulatory milestone for GPIL's expansion plans. Environmental approval is one of the most challenging and critical regulatory requirements for large industrial projects in India, making this achievement particularly significant.

Once operational, the new greenfield facility will more than triple GPIL's steel production capacity, positioning the company as a major player in India's steel sector. The project represents substantial industrial development for Chhattisgarh, a state known for its rich mineral resources and growing steel industry presence.

The phased implementation approach will allow GPIL to manage capital deployment effectively while scaling up production capabilities to meet India's growing steel demand.
