The European Commission is preparing to impose tariffs of 25–50% on imports of Chinese steel and related products. The move is aimed at protecting EU producers from global oversupply and easing pressure as the bloc undertakes costly decarbonisation measures.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed plans for a new long-term trade mechanism to replace the current steel safeguards, which expire in mid-2026.
China’s steel exports are projected to reach 115–120 million tonnes in 2025, near record levels, intensifying competition and prompting several countries to strengthen trade defenses.
The EU has also stepped up monitoring of scrap metal flows, including steel, aluminium, and copper, to safeguard supplies critical for the transition to low-carbon steelmaking.
