EU Carbon Rules May Unlock New Market for India’s Steelmakers

The European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) could open new opportunities for Indian steelmakers to export low-emission “green steel,” according to Saji Samuel, Executive Vice President at JSW Steel.

Samuel said CBAM, designed to reduce carbon leakage by taxing imports based on emissions, provides a chance for India’s large producers to align with EU climate standards and tap into the growing demand for sustainable steel.

However, he cautioned that the transition will be challenging. Producing green steel requires advanced technologies and higher costs, which could be difficult for small and medium-sized steelmakers in India to manage. Larger integrated companies, he noted, are better positioned to adapt and benefit from CBAM-driven demand.

With the EU pushing for stricter carbon rules, India’s ability to supply certified green steel could strengthen its presence in European markets while supporting its own decarbonization goals.
