India’s domestic steel industry must align with global quality and sustainability standards if it is to emerge as a world leader, a senior official from the Ministry of Commerce has emphasized. Speaking at a recent industry event, Joint Secretary (Commerce)Vimal Anand highlighted that India, already the second-largest steel producer, has the potential to set benchmarks in international markets provided it enhances competitiveness and product standards.
The official underlined that global buyers increasingly demand high-quality, certified, and sustainable steel products, and Indian producers must adopt best practices in technology, safety, and environmental compliance. Strengthening R&D, embracing green steel technologies, and reducing carbon emissions were identified as key priorities.
Additionally, the ministry urged collaboration between the public and private sectors to meet the government’s target of 300 million tonnes steel production capacity by 2030. Focus areas include value-added products, supply chain efficiency, and integration with global trade networks.
Industry experts noted that achieving global standards will not only expand India’s export footprint but also boost investor confidence, positioning the country as a reliable hub for steel in the global supply chain.
