ArcelorMittal has secured environmental clearance to set up a steel-powder production facility in Avilés, advancing its move into materials for additive manufacturing and high-performance engineering.
The plant will use scrap-based EAF steel and a high-pressure inert-gas atomizer to produce premium metal powders within a lower-emission, circular supply chain. Planned annual capacity is ~1,800 tonnes, with an initial slate covering 316L, 430L, 17-4PH, tool steels H11/H13, maraging M300, and select low-alloy grades.
Target applications include aerospace, defence, automotive, medical devices and energy, positioning northern Spain as a hub for advanced metal powders. ArcelorMittal said the Avilés unit marks its European entry into steel powders, integrating recycled feedstock with powder production to meet rising industrial 3D-printing demand. Commercial ramp-up details will be shared following subsequent approvals and build-out milestones.
