Odisha land problems halt AMNS's ₹60,000 crore steel plant.
Andhra Pradesh project picks up pace with speeded-up investment.
Trend of transferring projects to investor-friendly states continues.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) is said to be shifting its strategic interest to Andhra Pradesh, as its ambitious odyssey of setting up an integrated steel plant in Odisha gets stuck due to long land acquisition issues.
The ₹60,000 crore Odisha steel plant, unveiled with great pomp in 2021, has been plagued by procedural delays, particularly while procuring more than 2,000 acres of land. Bureaucratic clearances and local opposition have caused delay, inducing AMNS to focus on its existing and proposed facilities in Andhra Pradesh, where the investment environment is more conducive and clearances easier.
Sources report that AMNS is stepping up expansion of its downstream steel and pellet facilities in Andhra Pradesh's Vizag area, in addition to developing new investments in value-added steel products. The firm views this as a strategic step to protect production capacity growth in India's emerging steel market, while the timeline for the Odisha project is unresolved.
Analysts observe this as one of the wider tendencies in which steelmakers shift investments to industry-friendly states and states with quick land, environmental, and utility clearances.
