The Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, has announced that India plans to stop importing thermal coal by the fiscal year 2026. He is encouraging power plants that rely on imported coal to consider using domestic fuel and technology, as the country is increasing its coal production. The goal is to produce 1 billion tonnes of coal by 2026-27 and 2 billion tonnes by 2029-30. The government is addressing transportation challenges, and Coal India is investing in infrastructure. Currently, 15 power plants in India use imported coal. Joshi believes that with sufficient domestic coal supply, it will be more cost-effective for these plants to switch to using Indian coal.
