The Union Cabinet has given the green light for the next round of spectrum sales, with airwaves valued at ₹96,317.65 crore set to be auctioned off. However, industry analysts predict a subdued response from telecom operators as the current demand for 5G spectrum remains low.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced that the auction will include unsold airwaves from previous auctions as well as spectrum held by companies undergoing insolvency and those expiring in 2024. The auction is expected to take place in the fiscal year 2024-25.

To ensure uninterrupted telecom services, spectrum will be provided to companies for an interim period upon payment of the reserve price. Additionally, the Cabinet has formed a committee of secretaries to consider re-farming existing spectrum usages to meet future telecommunication needs.

The spectrum sale includes various bands such as 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz. However, analysts anticipate limited interest from telcos due to sufficient existing spectrum for their 5G requirements.

Selective buying may occur from Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, primarily for licence renewals in specific circles. The Adani Group may also acquire airwaves in lower spectrum bands. According to Jefferies, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are set to renew licenses in certain circles, while market leader Reliance Jio has no spectrum renewals scheduled for this year. Despite the anticipation of a muted response, the spectrum sale aims to enhance spectrum availability and support future telecommunications services.
